Today’s challenging business environment has brought the importance of delivering world-class investor servicing sharply into focus. Institutional investors expect to access their statements and capital calls online, anytime, from anywhere, placing additional pressure on the related management and delivery mechanisms used by private equity firms.

The recent conference, Private Equity Software and Service Provider Showcase organized by 4VCO at the Renaissance Chancery Court hotel in London, therefore provided an excellent opportunity for 150 private equity professionals to gather for a day of presentations, information sharing and networking to understand how technology helps funds to improve internal systems and operations.

The sessions were presented by technology providers to the private equity marketplace and proved to be engaging and thought-provoking, providing a forum to share experiences and discuss issues with peers. Managing transparency, portfolio management and embracing the cloud were some of the topics discussed on the day.

Intralinks’ Vice President of Product Marketing, Paul DiBlasi, hosted a session entitled ‘The Importance of Automating Investor Reporting’ which discussed the following:

  • Investors’ expectations for investor reporting
  • The broader benefits of enhanced investor servicing
  • How Intralinks helps funds distribute time sensitive information quickly and securely to their investors.

DiBlasi also went onto discuss the results of a recent survey from Intralinks titled ‘Establishing an Investor Focused Reporting Program’, providing private equity firms with an insight into investors’ experiences and preferences for accessing, receiving and managing fund documentation. One startling fact was that 37 percent of investors claimed to have been sent another institution’s capital call, statement or tax document. Obviously this can lead to damaged relations with the fund and potential legal problems, illustrating that an automated, online solution provides strong benefits for both private equity firms and institutional investors.

Overall, the survey showed a clear lack of alignment between what investors currently receive and what they want to get from private equity firms. However, Intralinks’ SaaS-based solution enables funds to increase investor satisfaction and deliver accurate reports by automating the entire reporting program, eradicating human error from the process and providing a simple way to access reports, eliminating the much deplored hard copy reports and the need to visit individual fund websites.
