Businesses across all industries are rapidly adopting file sharing. As business activity becomes more demanding, it is important that enterprise file sharing use cases are thoroughly understood and accessible to various departments within an organization.

On July 16, 2013, Intralinks hosted a webcast that discussed the top trends in enterprise file sharing. Our webcast featured IDC’s leading research analyst for Enterprise File Sharing, Chandana Gopal, who addressed the many different use cases within a business for syncing and sharing corporate files. The webcast classified these cases with the intention of highlighting the risk-benefit ratio to help our business colleagues and IT counterparts understand the importance of the matter.

During the webcast, we identified several use cases and trends. One example Chandana identified involved a customer service department sharing a large customer list with the marketing team for an online magazine. Sharing this list meant compliance, company reputation, and third parties were all considerations that could put the organization at risk. Using an enterprise file sharing tool, like Intralinks VIA™, they could easily and securely share large files of data without the hassle and inefficiency of a FTP or USB stick.

Another top trend from our file sharing webcast involved the supply chain managers’ need to communicate design changes with third party partners from around the globe. Using an enterprise file sync and share tool to efficiently and securely collaborate on projects in real-time would allow supply chain managers to gain a competitive advantage when market factors change.

Chandana also pointed out that healthcare companies need the ability to facilitate secure collaboration around critical content, such as patient records, clinical images, and hospital protocol. Healthcare businesses need to share this data in a way that is both HIPAA and HiTech compliant. It can be concluded from the top trends in enterprise file sharing that enterprise collaboration is becoming much more prominent in the business world. As our digital lives continue to emerge both personally and professionally, file sharing tools will provide immense advantages.
