How to Safely Extend the Value of SharePoint Outside the Firewall

One of the more lively discussions coming out of the Gartner Symposium/ ITxpo 2013 was around the future of SharePoint™ on-premise solutions. Gartner analyst Jeffrey Mann offered an opinion that "SharePoint on-premise is slowly on its way out," and elaborated on the woes some long-time SharePoint users continue to experience. Memeburn echoed this view, pointing out SharePoint’s lack of popularity among users and the difficulty upgrading or changing an installation:

  • "[Sharepoint] has become too big, too complex, and too hard to manage and upgrade, especially since in many organizations it’s highly customized. It takes three to five years to develop and test a new version, and then another year or two before most businesses take the plunge and install it. As a result, many people are using versions of SharePoint that are least four years old.”

Mann advises that companies heavily invested in SharePoint ought to start preparing for a future in which cloud or SaaS solutions play a bigger role, “I would hold back on upgrades and new development and choose the cloud option whenever I need to add new functionality."

Companies have huge volumes of data in SharePoint, and as they seek to extend the bounds of the corporation outside the firewall, secure, easy and repeatable strategies for involving the people requiring access to this data are needed. Unfortunately, some organizations face challenges moving to a secure SharePoint-centric extranet due to complex topologies, development time or security implementation.

We’ve produced a video which shows businesses how to securely share sensitive, privileged content living on SharePoint outside of the firewall – with no custom development required – in just seven minutes. Watch our video now and tell us what you think!
