It's All About the Right Deal, Not Just Any Deal Insights from the Argyle Corporate Development Forum

I recently returned from the Argyle Corporate Development Forum in San Francisco which was a great opportunity to connect with corporate dealmakers on the west coast who came from many of the leading Bay area companies.

One of the prevalent topics centered on how corporate development teams can better sift through the noise in their inbox and more efficiently identify the optimal acquisition targets. With bankers and advisors vying for dealmakers’ attention, it can be challenging to find the deals that match your strategic objectives. You want to do the right deal – not just any deal. This process has become even more complicated with the increase in evaluating cross-border opportunities.

The consensus in the room was that it boiled down to two factors: process and people. Creating a structured systems-based approach provides the needed guidelines for the corporate development team and internal stakeholders to evaluate and escalate potential strategic deals. This standardized model can leverage internal or external systems; the key is that there is a defined process in place. This allows corporate development teams to better manage their deal pipelines, make quicker and more informed decisions about what deals to pursue, and dedicate their time to the high priority opportunities. It also allows ideas to flow from internal business units - which are often the best source of deal generation – in a more formalized fashion.

Implementing these processes can take time, but if the payoff results in more efficiently identifying the right deal, then that’s time well spent.
