H12018 Chart-toppers from the Intralinks Project Name Generator

The most popular M&A code names created on the Intralinks Project Name Generator for the first half of 2018.

27 July 2018

The first six months of 2018 were a record-setting period for global mergers and acquisitions (M&A). According to Thomson Reuters, M&A activity reached $2 trillion in the first half of the year, a record for the value of deals in the period.

This is absolutely one of the most robust deal environments I’ve seen in my career,” said Neil Garfinkel, partner at Francisco Partners, at Intralinks’ recent “The Rise of PE: Impact on Dealmaking” panel. “Technology companies are really doing well. Corporates are doing well enough that they’re free to focus on things that they might want to shed. So, for us and most private equity firms, it’s been just about the busiest time in our history in terms of putting money to work and finding deals. The challenge for us is finding deals we can win in such a competitive market.”

As global dealmakers work fastidiously to seize opportunities, the need for a code name for their deal will inevitably arise. Those in the know turn to Intralinks’ trusted Project Name Generator to easily create a name to protect their client’s identity.

While project names can tap into the cultural zeitgeist, a mid-year survey of Intralinks platform data between January and June 2018 revealed that the most popular names so far are – drum roll, please – Blue, Alpha and Diamond. (See full list below.)

Project code names often say a lot about the teams behind the deal. Here’s some interesting food for thought culled from patterns we’ve noticed throughout the years:

  • Twenty percent of bankers choose a code name that has the same first letter as the name of their client
  • Eleven percent of all deal names start with S, following by C (9 percent), and A (8 percent)
  • Eagle is typically the most used deal name globally

Savvy dealmakers know the devil is in the details and a creative project name is crucial to maintain the secrecy of a deal. With the market moving at breakneck speed, there’s simply too much at stake in this current environment to do otherwise.
