M&A Dealmaking In Q1 2021 Finds Latin America in Flux

Will a once-stagnant region start to flourish?

Latin America (LATAM) — as is the rest of the world— is waiting for the wide-scale distribution of COVID-19 vaccines to bring stability to a region that has been stagnant in terms of M&A dealmaking for more than a quarter.

Until then, skepticism presides. The second wave of COVID-19 is already here, three potential vaccines have been identified and several countries in the region are set for several major elections.

While uncertainty remains, right now there are opportunities in LATAM. 2020 is ending as the year the world has learned to manage M&A virtually. So with the right technology and tools, LATAM is poised to make use of this new paradigm and begin a gradual reactivation of the M&A market.

Opportunities for buyers and sellers ahead

Though the pandemic’s downturn has brought a currency devaluation in some countries, restructurings and distressed assets are becoming prime acquisition targets. Technology, Financial and Insurance, Healthcare have been leaders in LATAM, with Distribution and Retail being bright prospects going forward with respect to the adaptation of new technology.

The jury is still out on when the industry will recover here. But even with COVID-19 still coexisting with us, there may be opportunities for buyers and sellers in a now-virtual business environment.

To get an understanding of what’s in store in LATAM and the rest of the world, I highly recommend the Q1 2021 edition of the SS&C Intralinks Deal Flow Predictor.

Independently verified as a highly accurate six-month forecast of merger and acquisition (M&A) activity, the SS&C Intralinks Deal Flow Predictor is compiled by tracking early-stage M&A transactions globally that are in preparation or have begun due diligence.

Along with our forecast of M&A activity for the next six months, the latest issue includes:

  • Spotlight feature: Global liquidity and financing
  • An interview with Meghan McGurk, SVP of Investment Banking at Houlihan Lokey

On behalf of the entire LATAM team, I wish you and yours a peaceful holiday season and a happy new year.
